Robin Hill Park Senior Pictures: Your Complete Location Guide
Everything you need to know about Moon Township's most beautiful portrait location - the spots, the timing, what to wear, and what to expect.
I've shot at a lot of parks around Pittsburgh. Robin Hill is the one I keep coming back to - and it's the one clients request by name after they've seen someone else's session there.
It's not one backdrop. It's nine or ten, all within a short walk of the parking lot. For senior portraits with two or three outfit changes, that matters more than most people realize. Each spot gives you a completely different feel, which means your gallery doesn't look like the same park over and over - it looks like a whole shoot.
Where It Is
Robin Hill Park sits at 949 Thorn Run Road in Moon Township, PA 15108 - about 15 minutes from Pittsburgh International Airport. If you're coming from Coraopolis, Sewickley, Robinson Township, or the North Shore, it's an easy drive with no Parkway traffic.
One landmark a lot of people in the area already know: the park is right next to Travelers Church. If you've been there, you know exactly where Robin Hill is.
Why Every Senior Session Here Ends Up Different
Most parks have a look. One vibe, one background, one type of shot. Robin Hill has nine or ten - and the best ones are all clustered close together near the entrance. You're not hiking a mile between setups. You're walking a few hundred feet and stepping into something completely different.
That's why it works so well for multiple outfit changes. Each location feels like its own shoot. Your gallery ends up with variety that you just can't get from most Pittsburgh locations.
The Spots I Use
The Wild Yellow Flower Field
When you walk in from the parking lot, look left. There's an open section of wild yellow flowers - tall, dense, and beautiful in late summer and early fall. You don't just pose in front of it, you walk into it. The flowers wrap around you and the light filters through in a way that looks almost unreal.
The Fleur de Lune Garden
Further into the park there's a second garden with a completely different feel - the Fleur de Lune Garden. This one has a mix of every kind of flower you can think of, all together: deep pinks, reds, oranges, purples. In the center there's a beautiful dark wood pergola with climbing vines winding through it. It's the spot where weddings happen here, and you can see exactly why. The arch frames a portrait in a way that nothing else in Pittsburgh does.
The Ivy Wall
Between the mansion and the second garden, there's a long stone wall completely covered in thick ivy. Open lawn in front of it. It's one of the most underrated backdrops in the park - the texture of the stone and vines together is rich and layered without pulling too much attention away from your subject. It looks like something out of a European estate, and it works especially well with neutral or white outfits.
This spot is just as beautiful for families - it's one of my go-to backdrops for family sessions here too.
The White Gazebo
Classic, clean, and sits right next to the ivy wall. The white gazebo photographs beautifully at almost any time of day - the clean white structure keeps focus on your subject, and in morning light it glows softly without any harsh shadows. There's a reason this is one of the most-requested spots in the park. It works with almost any outfit and any aesthetic.
The Wooded Path
Behind the gazebo area there's a trail through the trees. Quiet, shaded, and depending on the time of day, light comes through the canopy in long soft columns. In fall the path is covered in leaves and it looks like a painting. I use this for walking shots and candid frames - it also works beautifully for a more dramatic, moody portrait with a longer lens and the subject walking toward camera.
The Nimick Mansion (Robin Hill Center)
This is the anchor of the whole park. A 24-room Georgian-style home built in the early 1920s by Francis and Mary Nimick - donated to Moon Township in 1970, restored and opened to the public in 1978. Today it's the Robin Hill Center, used for events and weddings. The architecture is stunning: red brick, beautiful proportions, manicured grounds. Depending on where you stand and what angle you use, it reads as grand and classic or soft and romantic.
The Log Cabin
The Coventry Log Cabin has been standing since 1825. It was home to John Coventry, a Revolutionary War veteran. The wood is genuinely old and the texture is rough and dark - it's the kind of backdrop you can't fake. For seniors going for an earthy, outdoorsy vibe, or anyone who wants something that feels completely different from a manicured garden shot, this is the spot.
The Garage Doors
This one surprises people every time. The old carriage house doors near the mansion have the most beautiful warm copper tones - rich, aged, and full of character. The color of that wood against almost any outfit is stunning. It's the kind of backdrop that looks like it belongs in a magazine, and it's right there in the middle of a public park in Moon Township.
Best Time of Year
Spring - One of the most underrated seasons at Robin Hill. Everything is fresh and bright, the gardens start filling in through April and May. Clean, light backgrounds.
Summer - The wild flower field is at peak. The Fleur de Lune Garden is in full bloom and the wooden arch has climbing vines winding all through it. Lush and beautiful.
Fall - The most requested season here. The wooded path fills with leaves, the tree line goes orange and gold, and late-day light through the canopy is stunning. I book up fast in October.
Winter - I don't recommend it. The park loses most of what makes it special without foliage, and cold outdoor sessions in January are tough on everyone.
Best Time of Day
Morning is my preferred time at Robin Hill, and where I schedule most sessions. The light is soft, open, and consistent - especially near the entrance where the wildflower field and open lawn are under clear sky. You can work across the whole park without hunting for good light. There's a freshness to morning sessions here that you just can't replicate later in the day.
Afternoon works well too. The wooded sections and shaded garden areas stay beautifully lit throughout the day, and the mansion and ivy wall look great even when the sun is higher.
Golden hour has its moments here - when the light catches the gazebo or filters through the trees on the wooded path, it's genuinely beautiful. But Robin Hill is a wooded park, and as the sun drops, a lot of spots lose their light. You're working with fewer options. I always mention golden hour because those frames are stunning - it's just not my first choice for this specific location.
Morning start times: spring and summer sessions typically begin around 8:00-9:00 AM. Fall sessions work beautifully from 9:00 AM when the low-angle light comes through the trees.
What to Wear
The backgrounds at Robin Hill are rich with texture and color. You want outfits that complement, not compete. Earthy, muted, and neutral tones work consistently well here: sage green, cream, dusty rose, burgundy, warm brown, navy.
For fall sessions, rust, olive, and camel look incredible against the foliage. For summer sessions near the flower gardens, anything soft and simple lets the backdrop shine without fighting it.
Avoid very bright patterns or neons near the garden sections - there's already a lot happening visually and the goal is to keep the focus on your face.
When to Book
Summer sessions are booking now - spring is the perfect time to lock in your summer date. If fall foliage is what you're after, the beginning of summer is when October starts to fill. But I work around schedules and make things happen, so reach out whenever you're ready and we'll find something that works.
Flexible on exact date? Even easier - gaps open up throughout the season and I can usually get you in sooner than you'd expect.
Practical Details
Sessions run about 1.5 to 2 hours depending on how many people are in the crew. Proofs are in your inbox within 24 hours.
Plan for 2-3 outfits. Most people change in their car between spots - it's quick and easy. There's also one bathroom near the main pavilion area if needed.
Parking is free right at the entrance on Thorn Run Road. Cell service is fine throughout the park, and the terrain is flat and easy - no difficult hiking between spots.
Dogs are welcome and photograph beautifully here. Plan to bring someone who isn't in the main session to hold the leash while we're shooting - that way you're not managing the dog mid-portrait, and they can jump in for the fun shots without stopping everything.
